Fourth Plinth

Posted on: January 26th, 2012

Today, the next art work for the Fourth Plinth, Powerless Structures, Fig 101, by Scandinavian artistic duo Elmgreen & Dragset will be unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London.

The Fourth Plinth series is commissioned by the Mayor of London and supported by Arts Council England. Commissions always generate an international debate about contemporary art and its role in our public spaces. This year’s sculpture by Elmgreen & Dragset is a bronze portraying a boy playing astride his rocking horse. The child on a rocking horse is juxtapositioned with the statues of the historical heroes in the square. Instead of acknowledging the heroism of the powerful, the work celebrates the heroism of growing up. There is not yet a history to commemorate here – only a future to hope for.
